The Big Fat Indian wedding has become a benchmark worldwide with the festivities and functions surrounding it. From the wedding invites to the guest list to the cutlery to the cuisines to the outfits … the list is endless! So after the whole show for the world (and of course oneself – coz hey! You are the main stars in it!) it’s time to get into a zone where you can enjoy yourself with your significant other. From varied interests in activities one has to carefully pick the one to suit you best and where you can have a care for the world! From my years of curating bespoke honeymoons for clients, some of my favorites are:
This island nation that’s boasts of many people of the Indian descent – is an ideal honeymoon destination after going through a Big Fat Indian Wedding. The coconut palms swaying in the warm breeze gives one an immediate calmness. The perfect de stressor when you see the calm blue waters that sweep your breath away. Things to do in Fiji when on vacation is to just sit back and relax.. immerse yourself in the stillness of time. A must stay in a luxury over water bure or beach bure – which are traditional Fijian inspired bungalows. Honeymooners paradise – this island country is is the perfect spot for your honeymoon in every way.

Having grown up on a healthy dose of Bollywood movies and especially the Yash Chopra variety – undoubtedly Switzerland which was Yash Chopra’s favourite destination (there even is a suite at the iconic Victoria Jungfrau resort and spa in Interlaken named after him!). The snow capped mountains where we have seen many colourful chiffon sarees flutter hold a special place in our hearts and many love to visit to capture a glimpse of themselves in similar angles.
The youngest most adventurous country in the world! I like to call this “jannat” as it really feels it! The majestic fjords and glaciers combined with the pure crisp weather makes it an ideal destination for the outdoors and nature lover. One can choose to take in the local culture and interact with Maoris , watch their cooking customs and the famous “Haka” war-dance at the Maori village in Te Puia in Rotorua, or jump off airplanes and skydive into the most gorgeous landscape (my favourite being Queenstown) or take a cruise into the silence of Milford Sounds where you can drop a coin in the still waters and hear the echo around (imagine what happens when you say “I love you”.. how many times will that echo around)
The land of the ancient Gods..and romanticized the most. Our Bollywood actors have romanced in the azure blue waters of Capri, the canals of Venice where the gondolier sings soulfully, the locales of Punglia.. only to name a few. The rolling hills of Tuscany, the vineyards around San Gimignano, the history and romance of Florence is much loved by young honeymooners, besides of course the lure of the blue seas around the southern part, whether be it the island of Sicily or the gorgeous Amalfi Coast. The cuisine and wine needless to say, is so loved by Indians, that after desi khaana the next favourite is Italian! What say… Mama Mia!
Pack your bags and head out to Bali, if you want that perfect mix of the tranquility of the seas and also would like to party and be around people. Visas on arrival make this one of the most popular destinations for honeymooners. To start, stay at the serene Ubud area surrounded by rice paddy fields and confluence of rivers. Enjoy cooking classes together at a local’s home or cycle around and pick up trinkets. Then you can move to one of the gorgeous resorts(to suit all budgets) in Kuta / Nusa Dua / Seminyak areas and relax with beautiful beaches and great spas! For some of the more adventurous ones, you can enjoy a range of water sports at the beaches or indulge in some retail therapy.
